Kate Grealy - Song-writer, Singer, Guitarist
Kate Grealy’s performances reel you into picturesque worlds of song where stories of life, love, humanity and land are woven into soaring and poetic musical scenes. Kate and her musical friends use vocal harmonies, percussion, harmonica and guitar to traverse the roads of a songwriter’s penned travels between life’s interludes. “Very relaxing, melodic … So much talent, so young” (Cathy Bedford, ABC’s Drive program).
Kate has been busy writing new material, alongside touring, travelling, studying, working, and living. Her latest work is available for download for free on the 'Music' section of this website for a limited time. Much of her recent work was inspired by recent travel in regional Australia and also by a recent trip to Balochistan in Pakistan (a province bordering Afghanistan).
In 2006 Kate toured regional Victoria and New South Wales, performing at several venues between Melbourne and Sydney, including high-profile support slots with ARIA award-winning country star Troy Casser-Daly at the Tallangatta Drought Relief Concert, and Xavier Rudd at Bilyana.
Highlights of 2007 include performances at Port Fairy Folk Festival; Yackandandah Folk Festival; The National Folk Festival; and The Forum Theatre - one of Melbourne's most prestigious venues - at a Tribute concert commemorating the tenth anniversary of Jeff Buckley's passing (see the calendar page for more tour info).
Kate’s musical life as a performing artist began in the regional town of Albury-Wodonga as a clarinettist with her High School's band at the age of twelve. After taking up the guitar at fifteen she started to write and began performing her original compositions at the age of sixteen at open mic afternoons to a sometimes rowdy but always supportive country audience.
Kate has spent the last five years writing and show-casing her songs around Melbourne, touring regional Victoria and New South Wales as well appearing at several festivals and community events. She also performs with two emerging bands: The Halcyon Tide - a vocal trio including two of Melbourne's most exciting emerging songwriters Eva Popov and Rene Sephton, a stunning group to look out for (see the links page for their website); and The Empty Quarter with Tabla player Rasheeda Cooper, Electronicist Mark Pederston, and bassist Pete Emptage. Kate has recorded four CDs since 2001 and is also a budding writer, currently working on her first novel. She completed her Anthropology/Politics degree early in 2007.
